In an effort to assist nonprofits with capacity building, the Scott County Community Foundation will be hosting a two-part series, Effective Nonprofit Boards. Nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers will learn how to navigate the necessary steps to build a strong governing board.

The first session in the series will be “Developing and Strengthening Your Board of Directors.” Topics covered include understanding the types of nonprofit boards, selecting/removing board members, developing a board orientation, and knowing your bylaws. It will be held Thursday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Scott County Lifelong Learning Center on Community Way in Scottsburg.

The second session will be “Understanding Board Member Roles.” Participants will understand board members’ roles in finances, the roles of officers, and roles of committees. The session will be held Wednesday, March 15 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Mid-America Science Park, business conference room.

The sessions will be presented by Mark Eddy, President/CEO of Leadership Southern Indiana (LSI). In his 12 years at LSI, Mark has transformed the organization from a one-stop program shop to an organization serving all generations of professionals-in-development and diversifying funds to accommodate the growing organization. Scott County Community Foundation partnered with LSI in 2020 to expand their service area to Scott County. Eddy is also dedicated to community service, having served or currently serving on the boards of Indiana Leadership Association, Floyd Memorial Foundation, Centra Credit Union Supervisory Committee, Align Southern Indiana Operating Board, Metro United Way and One Southern Indiana Advocacy Committee.

“Our Board of Directors is pleased to bring back in-person meetings this year,” said Scott County Community Foundation Executive Director Jaime Toppe. “These sessions will help make our organizations better at fulfilling our mission and services to the community. Having an effective board is crucial to a nonprofit’s success whether it is an all-volunteer organization or one with paid staff.”

The cost to attend each session is $10, and includes lunch and materials. Registration is required by one week prior to each session. Please call 812-752-2057 or email
