Scott County’s first-ever StoryWalk was installed at Austin Community Park recently. A large group of supporters attended an opening reception hosted by Scott County Community Foundation’s Early Childhood Committee. The StoryWalk Project is a series of signs with pages from a children’s book, placed along a walking path. Each sign has interactive activities to encourage early literacy skills along with exercise and nature. The StoryWalk installation was made possible through the Jayce Ray Stallings Memorial Fund at the Scott County Community Foundation as well as a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. The first storybook featured is Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. The Community Foundation’s Early Childhood Committee will rotate the books quarterly or seasonally, and installations are being planned for other locations in Scott County. Sponsors are needed for each book, with one sign’s activities reserved for the sponsor. The cost to sponsor is $250 and those interested can contact the Community Foundation at 812-752-2057 or email info@scottcountyfoundation.org.
