Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council Vice President Kaleb Mount awards the inaugural Helping Hand Award to Ashley Martin. This new award is for students who go above and beyond in making our community a better place. Ashley, a fifth grade student at Vienna-Finley Elementary School, was nominated by her principal, Mr. Heath. In addition to sports and church activities, what makes Ashley extra special is a cause she started two years ago in third grade. Her nomination letter stated that she was sad that there are kids who don?t have a warm coat to wear in the winter, and she wanted to do something to help those who are less fortunate. So, she started Ashley?s Coat Drive, with all donations going to the Clearinghouse. Each year her cause grows, and this past winter she was able to donate 183 coats and $1,007! Ashley was presented with a certificate, flowers and a $100 award for her efforts. Ashley is the daughter of Joe and Melanie Martin of Scottsburg.
