Scott County Community Foundation board members Sheila Carter and Nancy Barr present a check for $181 to Mandy Petersen for Blessings for Prom. The grant was awarded from the Dottie Shelhamer Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation. Mandy is Dottie?s granddaughter and founded this program last year to help local high school girls. Blessings for Prom provides free dresses, shoes, alterations, jewelry, a gift bag and Bible.
?My mom would have loved this project,? said Kathy Bayes, who established the Dottie Shelhamer Memorial Fund in memory of her mother, who taught and coached at Austin High School for 42 years.??She was all about giving.?It has been a joy to see Mandy take this idea and run with it.? I cannot tell you how many people in our community have donated their time, money, dresses, etc. to make this project such a huge success.?We just finished our second Blessings for Prom, and the volunteers benefited just as much as the girls that received dresses.?Mom would be so proud of Mandy’s vision, and thrilled to see so many community members working together!?
