In an effort to assist nonprofits with capacity building, the Scott County Community Foundation will be hosting two lunch and learn sessions this fall. Nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers will learn about fraud risks and cybersecurity.
The first session in the series will be “Fraud Risks in Internal Controls.” Attendees will learn about the prevalence and cost of fraud, behavioral red flags and fraudster profiles, internal control weaknesses and how to strengthen them, cybersecurity risks and practical protections, and real-world examples and actionable insights. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center. The presenters will be Makalynn Funk and Karen Dringenburg with auditing firm Blue & Co.
The second session will be “Cybersecurity in the A.I. Digital Age: What Nonprofits and Business Owners Need to Know.” Attendees will learn about recent trends and emerging threats, common opportunity and improvement areas, and emerging techniques and technologies. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 30 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center. The presenter will be Michael Thomas, senior partner at Leap Managed I.T.
“We are excited to bring these important topics to our community,” said Scott County Community Foundation Executive Director Jaime Toppe. “These sessions will help make our organizations better at fulfilling our mission and services to the community. Having an effective board is crucial to a nonprofit’s success whether it is an all-volunteer organization or one with paid staff. Financial controls and cybersecurity in today’s world are key components to this success.”
The cost for each session is $15 per person, which includes lunch and materials. Registration is required one week prior to the session.
