The Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council (“YGC”), a program of the Scott County Community Foundation, awarded $7,272.93 in grants to youth-related projects in the community. The YGC honored grant recipients at their annual celebration on May 17.
- Austin Middle and High School was awarded $1,000 for “Life Skills in the Community.” Teacher Lee Anne Hahn will take her students on restaurant outings to help teach life and social skills.
- Bree’s Blessings was awarded $1,000 for “Community Art Box.” The grant will purchase art supplies and kits for their art box located outside their office. The art is for children of all ages in Scott County.
- CEASe of Scott County was awarded $1,000 for “Back to School Bash.” The grant will purchase supplies for the annual back to school gathering. The Back to School Bash provides free sports physicals, immunizations, vision screening, school supplies, and resources.
- CRADLE Family Resource Center was awarded $2,000 to purchase formula for infants.
- Englishton Park was awarded $550 for “Children’s clothes closet.” They provide a 10-day overnight summer camp for at-risk children ages 8-12. The grant funds will be used to purchase clothing for children in need.
- Scott County 4-H was awarded $600 for scholarships for 4-H camp.
- Scott County Partnership was awarded $1,000 for EMPOWER’s Amazing Shake program. This competition helps middle school students at Austin and Scottsburg develop professional skills.
In addition, Austin Elementary School was awarded $371.93 for the YGC’s “Philanthropy in the Schools” project. YGC members visited the fourth grade students to teach them about fundraising and gave them a challenge to raise money for teacher projects. The YGC members then visited the fifth grade students to teach them about grantmaking, and they selected a teacher project to fund using the dollars raised by the fourth grade students. The YGC supplemented the teacher projects so that all could be fully funded.
The total amount of grants awarded since the YGC’s inception is over $110,000.
“I’m so glad we were able to award our grant money to so many of the organizations in our community,” said Grants Committee Co-Chair Ellie Groenenboom. “We hope that they represent our mission of YGC, and make our community a better place!”
